Most CEX Associates will
have access to a "home" phone that is provide
by their sponsoring school or company. In addition,
many CEX Associates will have access to a phone through
their company office. We highly encourage you to buy
a cell phone once you are in China. Typically, a cell
phone from your home country will have much higher rates
than one in China.
You can call long distance from China using IDD,
a local long-distance service, though the connection
is usually not good and it can be expensive. The most
economical option is to get someone to call you.
Calling Home
To call home you can purchase a discount phone card
from a local merchant (it costs about USD 13 or 100
RMB). You will have about 35 minutes of talking time
on calls to the United States. Just follow the easy
instructions on the back of the card and use the appropriate
country code.
Mail
Mail service in China is slow and unpredictable
- don't count on receiving all of your mail from home,
and vice versa. The best option is secure a post office
box in your home country before you leave and send
your mail there.
E-mail
We highly encourage you to open an email account
that is accessible in China. Yahoo and Hotmail are
two that may be accessed in China and provide service
that is free of charge.
Temporary Mailing Address
If you need to receive a letter, your best
option is to have it sent to the office of your employer.
You will want to alert them that a letter is coming
for you. Since most mail is open by the office staff,
you will want to take the necessary precautions if
your letter contains confidential materials or information.
