Coming to China, you will join a growing and vibrant community
of visitors with nationalities from all over the world.
Your experience in China will be funny and challenging.
Remember, our dedicated staff is here to help you!
Women
Women planning to teach in China can expect attitudes
that are outdated by Western social standards. East Asian
cultures are based on a traditional societal hierarchy
in which women are the lowest members and must show deference
to males at all times.
Whatever your point of view is, remember that you are
a guest in a foreign land. Gender roles are created over
thousands of years and evolve according to social norms.
Try to play a positive role in understanding and acclimating
to your new culture. You might not always agree with cultural
standards abroad, but if you take them in stride you'll
certainly enhance your learning experience.
Minorities
In major Chinese cities you will find a large and growing
community composed with "people of color" from
around the world. Most "ex-Pat" foreigners are
in China because of a work assignment, family member or
spouse.
You can find "people of color" from every corner
of the earth in China's international communities.
For most rural Chinese communities you will be the first
"person of color" they have ever seen. As the
Chinese custom is with all things, you can expect a lot
of stares. But, these are not the kind of stares you usually
see in the United States, Great Britain or elsewhere.
For the Chinese, you are something totally new! |
